A retired couple from Munich, Claudia and Bernd Steinerwas expecting an unforgettable trip to Paris during the 2024 Summer Olympics. They have always followed the Summer Games, as they explained in an interview with «Focus.»
The couple had already budgeted 3,000 euros for ten days in the city of love. But their wait was short-lived when the hotel canceled their reservation and suddenly asked for almost triple the original price.
«We had booked for 60 euros a night, but then we were told to pay 150 euros. Furthermore, there was no longer parking or breakfast,” says Steiner.
The hotel justified the change with the high demand during the games. Costs were higher and demand had exploded. However, the hoteliers violate French law.
The European Consumer Center (ECC) confirmed to «Focus» that since the beginning of the year, hoteliers have increasingly changed or canceled room reservations for the Summer Olympics.
This practice violates French law, as price increases are only allowed with the guest’s consent and cancellations are only allowed for valid reasons.
In many cases, pricing errors or technical failures are cited as reasons, but they are not valid. The hotel must also refund all money in case of cancellation.
