The governor of Liguria, Giovanni Toti, ends up under house arrest. It is the political-judicial bomb of the day. So, what will happen in the Region now? Yes, because Toti he is suspended from his role as governor, as required by the Severino law. Circumstance confirmed by Toti’s lawyer, Stefano Savi: “There is no talk of resignation. He is suspended from office and then we will see what happens”, he began.
And again, the lawyer added: “The trial is still to be done. We see the documents, we read them and we try to understand how to build the defense elements in the best possible way. The president is serene and calm. He wants to face the proceedings by explaining everything in detail”. Always the lawyer, he remarked how “the Region will continue to work even in his absence. These are all facts for which we can give an explanation because they fall within the scope of legitimate administrative activity.”
Yes, but how will the region work? The inspiration is always offered by the Severino law, which talks about legal suspensionwhich is why Giovanni Toti’s functions will pass to the vice president, Alessandro Piana. According to the regional statute, in fact, the president is substitute pro tempore in all his functions by the vice president, in the fullness of his powers.
Alessandro Piana, 52 years old, born in Imperia, is an agrotechnician and agricultural entrepreneur. He has been a member of the League since 2001, and from 2005 to 2009 he was a municipal councilor in Pontedassio and, at the same time, group leader councilor of the Community Olive Mountain. Therefore from 2006 to 2010 he was provincial councilor and group leader of the Northern League in Imperia. Then in 2009 he was re-elected as municipal councilor in Pontedassio, from 2010 to 2015 he was president of the Provincial Council of Imperia, in 2014 he was appointed vice-mayor of Pontedassio. In May 2015 the election to the regional council in the Imperia district and then the Lega Nord Liguria-Salvini council group.
It was March 30, 2018 when Piana was elected president of the Regional Council; since 2020 he has been vice-president and regional councilor for Agriculture, breeding, hunting and fishing, as well as having, among other responsibilities, that of inland development.
