Friuli remembers the anniversary of the devastating earthquake of 6 May 1976.

Today, May 6th, marks the 48th anniversary of the earthquake that shook Friuli on 6 May 1976. With a magnitude of 6.4, the earthquake devastated the middle valley of the Tagliamento River, causing extensive damage to over one hundred towns in the provinces of Udine and Pordenone and leading to the loss of 965 lives.

Known locally as Orcolat, a Friulian term that evokes the monstrous force of nature and the local popular tradition associated with the cause of earthquakes, the event was felt in almost all of central-northern Italy. The tremors were followed by numerous replicas, some of which are equally powerful.

On the occasion of this anniversary, the Julia Alpine Brigade organized a commemoration on May 4th at the Goi-Pantanali barracks in Gemona. It is here that, in 1976, the earthquake caused the collapse of a military building, causing the death of 29 young people conscript soldiers.

The city of Gemona del Friuli, among the most affected by the fury of the earthquake, will host a commemorative mass this evening in the local cathedral. The event is expected to include the president of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Massimiliano Fedriga, and the regional councilor for civil protection, Riccardo Riccardi.
