Ganna gives up the pink jersey

Tadej Pogacar wins the seventh stage of the 2024 Giro d’Italia, the 40.6 km time trial. The pink jersey consolidates the lead in the general classification. The Slovenian from UAE finished in 51’44”, beating Filippo Ganna with a lead of 17”. Third Magnus Sheffield, at 49”.

The ranking

Pogacar, with his second stage success, takes off in the general classification. The leader leads with 2’36” ahead of the Colombian Daniel Martinez (Bora Hansgrohe). Geraint Thomas (Ineos) is third at 2’46”. The best of the Italians is Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious), eighth at 4’11” from the leaders.

The eighth stage

Tomorrow, in the eighth stage, Pogacar can land another shoulder. We run the Spoleto-Prati di Tivo, 152 km with a barrage of climbs. The first Grand Prix of the mountain arrives after 37 km, with the ascent to Forca Capistrello (third category). From the Croce Abbio peak, after 112 km, the long 25 km descent begins which precedes the final climb: 14.6 km to the finish line, with gradients from 7 to 12%.

What Pogacar said

“I’m very happy with the sensations I had on the time trial bike. I haven’t raced one since last year’s world championships, but in the meantime I’ve worked a lot on this aspect and I’m happy that today it paid off. I started with a easier pace to get used to the bike, then I tackled the climb at full speed”, Pogacar’s words. “The last stretch was better suited to me than to Pippo Ganna. It won’t be like that in the next time trial”, he says before thinking about tomorrow’s stage. “I know the finish of Prati di Tivo. It was the queen stage when I won there at the Tirreno-Adriatico two years ago, but this time it is a stage of a Grand Tour.”
