Mark Cavendish has left its mark on the Tour of Hungary 2024. In the presence of a very good sprint field, the BritishAstana Qazaqstan he managed to impose himself in the second stage of the Pro.Series level race currently taking place on the Hungarian roads, thus signing his second success of the season and victory number 164 of his very long career on asphalt. Cavendish can thus look to the rest of the season with greater optimism, after some physical problems had affected his performance in recent weeks.
“The team was simply phenomenal – the words of the Isle of Man rider after the race – My teammates did a great job and I managed to top it all off by winning. The finish wasn’t easy, there were several curves that made it very complicated on a technical level. But for us, in the end, everything worked out and I’m very happy.”
Cavendish is keen to name his companions, one by one: “Yevgeniy Gidich it protected us from the wind and kept us in the right position all day then Michele Gazzoli he did a good job on the climb, Gleb Syritsa escorted us to a perfect position entering the last kilometres, Cees Bol he did a splendid sprint at high speed on a slightly uphill stretch and then, towards the end, Michael Morkov he kept the speed high and brought me close to the finish line, giving me the chance to finish with a short, but explosive, acceleration.”
A nice boost to morale, therefore: “I managed to arrive at this race in good shape, after a good period of training – Cavendish’s words – This success adds motivation to all of us in view of the great objective of the season, the Tour de France 2024“.
