Dfter the rebound in sales in April, which recorded a growth of 21%, another piece of good, or rather excellent, news for motorcyclists: the circulation bans for Euro 0 and Euro 1 motorbikes, which Milan had put on the calendar for October 1, 2024, they have been postponed by twelve months.
It emerged yesterday, but for months some doubts had also leaked into Palazzo Marino. How should the news be read? It is just an extemporaneous political move or rather an adaptation to the general rethinking on the famous Green Deal European? The second, in our opinion.
In just a few years, the Green Deal that seemed to enthuse Europe appears deflated, perhaps even emptied, in its values and objectives. On environmental sustainability European governments had built their modern and progressive image, there was talk of future generations and the fight against climate change, the ecological transition seemed imminent. And then…
First came Covid, then the Russian war in Ukraine arose and finally the humanitarian and political disaster between Israel and Palestine. Throw in inflation, the economic recession, and last but not least some more reflections on times of the electrical conversion and that’s it: now it is understood that the European plans will need to be thoroughly revised and we are discussing it.
It is here, we think, that the decision of the Municipality of Milan comes in: Europe is slowing down, electricity is struggling, citizens’ resources to replace old vehicles with less polluting ones are limited. And after all, it is also clear to Mayor Sala that the Euro 0 and Euro 1 motorbikes are very little in the disastrous general picture.
