It would have been an infection that struck down Mauro Carminati, the 32-year-old Lamborghini engineer who died last May 3 in Edinburgh. The mathematical engineer originally from Bergamo had arrived in Scotland a few days ago, where he intended to enjoy a short holiday. Carminati lived in Crevalcore and worked in the Lamborghini factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese. He left Italy last April 26th and was due to return after five days. As reported by Corriere della Sera, shortly after arriving in Scotland, the 32-year-old noticed swelling in his leg, which would soon turn black. However, when he decided to go to hospital, the infection had worsened, to the point that it had spread to his lungs. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and was then transferred to the intensive care unit. At that point, the doctors notified the family.

The rapid worsening

It is May 1st when mother Cinzia and father Fabrizio arrive in Edinburgh, with their aunt Marina. The engineer’s family members say they found him “still conscious and able to speak”. However, Carminati’s condition worsened rapidly: «The fever rose – explains the 32-year-old’s aunt – and a cerebral hemorrhage occurred. Initially the doctors thought there was a bacterium at the origin and gave him three courses of antibiotics, which however did not produce the desired results. They then understood that there was actually a virus at the origin of the infection.”

Doubts about death

Even now it is not clear to the family what could have triggered the infection. And how much the initial therapy chosen by the doctors, which turned out to be wrong, may have had an impact. Certainly, explains the 32-year-old’s aunt, he himself would not have had any suspicions about his health: «Mauro was very well, he enjoyed excellent health: it was a bolt from the blue. If he had suspected he was unwell, he wouldn’t even have left for this short holiday that he had dreamed of for so long.”
