The latest notice released on the homepage on Encyclopaedia Metallum/Metal Archives leaves no doubt on the matter: on the popular database of the internet, bands that use or even just suspected of using AI (Artificial Intelligence) will not be accepted in any way, and users are even asked for help in case they are aware of bands that exploit this methodology they have been mistakenly added to the database. The press release and subsequent translation follows.
Recently, there has been a notable increase in the number of bands submitted to the site who have generated music via AI. We want to clarify what our position is on these bands and how we intend to proceed in their evaluation.
It goes without saying, at least until now, that when we envisioned growing the largest and most comprehensive database of Metal music, part of that vision was the preservation of art and human expression through music. Until AI, this was a fact. The music described on the site is, in some way, played, programmed and composed by a human being. This still remains an important criterion for us, and we are convinced that AI-generated music does not meet this requirement.
With the above in mind, we will not accept bands with AI-generated albums and will more thoroughly review submissions suspected of having AI-generated music.
For band submitters, if you have a band that is suspected of featuring AI-generated music, we may ask you to provide evidence to the contrary, whether this is behind-the-scenes material, statements from the band or their label, evidence of band playing live, promotional material showing the authenticity of the band and so on. The more evidence we have to prove that such a band is real and that its music is composed by a human being, the better. Our goal is not to make things harder for you or anyone else, but we want to stay true to our vision for the site.
This policy is not perfect and is a work in progress that may evolve over time. We know that some bands with AI-generated music will be mistakenly added to the site, and we also know that mistakes can be made and that bands without AI-generated material may be flagged for having AI-generated music. With your help we hope to avoid this as much as possible.
