Dua Lipa talks about the time she became a meme: “It was humiliating”

It doesn’t matter how famous or successful you are: mean comments always hurt. Speaking is Dua Lipa, who in a new interview with Guardian talked about the time his performance at the BRITs (with the song New Rules), has become a meme.

A live that many had branded as disappointing, and the comments were wasted: “I love his lack of energy”, wrote one user. «Go girl, give us nothing!», As if to say «she continues to do absolutely nothing on stage». Not only that: in the same period, a dance move of hers had also gone viral, not exactly among the best, a step which on social media had been nicknamed the “pencil sharpener dance”.

“It was a painful and humiliating moment,” Dua told Guardian. «When I won the Grammy for best new artist, people said I didn’t deserve it. “He has no stage presence, he won’t make his way”». Dua had already spoken to Rolling Stone about that moment, a few months ago: «I finally managed to do something I liked and I was rejected, as if I were someone who couldn’t do anything good. Plus I was also tossed around the world. Lots of promotion, lots of rehearsals: too much of everything, without having time to perfect anything.”

At that time the pop star had removed herself from social media because «people were dismantling everything I had worked on, and I had to learn all this in front of everyone. All of this was happening while I was 22, 23 and still growing up. You have to build a thick skin. You have to be resilient.”

A feeling that abandoned her only two years later, when at the end of the writing process of Future Nostalgia there was the performance of Don’t Start Now at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

«When that song came out, which received a lot of praise, I realized that I would finally dance in front of people after what they had thought of me for so long. And I came back, I did that performance, and everyone was amazed. “Oh, we were wrong!”. She helped me a lot.”

Dua Lipa, who just released her new album last week. As a guest on SNL last weekend, he joked about the meme. “Don’t say I didn’t give you anything, I gave you the best meme ever.”
