Will the new Planet of the Apes trilogy tie back to the original 1968 film?

The plans for the future of the Planet of the Apes saga are clear and include a new trilogy of which Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes it’s only the first episode, but how will the franchise continue in the next ones? Will the story ever connect to the original 1968 film?

Probably yes, at least that’s what director Wes Ball, chosen by Disney to guide the franchise towards this new incarnation of films, hopes to one day see. In a recent promotional interview, Wes Ball said clearly:

I think we still have many, many years before we get to the historical period in which Charlton Heston’s films are set, where a spaceship falls from the sky onto a planet full of monkeys. The continuity of all these films has always been a bit loose, they’re not like the other franchises out there whose continuity is so absolutely set in stone that you can’t change a thing about it – but certainly the more these films go on the more we will arrive towards the era of the original Planet of the Apes. What we tried to do with this new film was open a door to the future: all these films are about humans and apes living together or not, how they coexist, the drama and conflict between them. So in the next chapters the audience will discover that this isn’t just a monkey story, it’s also a human storyif we are lucky enough to make more there will be a lot of drama and conflict to explore.
