The first critical reactions ahead of the Cannes 2024 premiere promote George Miller’s film, promising a new burst of energy.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will inaugurate the Cannes Film Festival starting next week, but the first reactions of the critics after the press screenings have found their way to social media and apparently they seem to decidedly positiveimplying that the director of Mad Max: Fury Road George Miller is about to give us another extraordinary action epic.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will tell the story of the youth of the character of the Furious Empress, played by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road. The upcoming prequel, which will open the 2024 Cannes Film Festival Out of Competition, will reveal the past of Furiosa, kidnapped from her home as a child by the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and his horde of bikers before going on a quest for revenge to reunite with his family and his homeland.
After the transition to Cannes 2024, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga by George Miller will arrive in Italian cinemas on May 24th.
The enthusiasm of the critics
“It gives me great joy to report that Furiosa is really, really damn beautiful” wrote the film critic in X IndieWire David Ehrlich. “It works in an extremely different gear from Fury Road’ (in ways that I suspect will frustrate some people), but it also manages to make that film even richer, carving its own legend into the wasteland.”
New York Film Critics Circle member writer Esther Zuckerman called the film “Fantastic”while Erik Davis of Fandango talked about “a powerful action film at its absolute best”.

At times it almost seems to surpass the canvas of the IMAX format: it’s SO grand – and yet at times it has adeeply touching intimacy. Recalling cinematic elements from the ’50s to the ’80s, it’s a rich, intelligent vision in which the cast seems to be having the most fun.”.
