Challengers remains in the lead over the weekend of May 2-5

Thanks to an event related to football, we moderated the damage in weekend takings, which however were decidedly lower than a year ago. In fact, overall 4,484,747 euros were obtained, while in the weekend of 4-7 May 2023 5,903,978 euros were obtained (therefore, a drop of 23.9%), largely due to the onset of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, clearly first with 3,806,614 euros. It is worth noting that, while on Saturday ‘only’ 10% was lost compared to 2023, on Sunday the decline was much more evident (-26%), with a collection of 1,355,108 euros compared to 1,834,846 euros on Sunday 7 May 2023.

The similar weekend of 2019 (02-05 May) went much better, bringing home 7,925,836 euros, in which the second weekend of Avengers: Endgame contributed a figure practically equal to that of Guardians with 3,994,686 euros, but was also better supported by titles such as Laurel and Hardy (862,139 euros) and the third weekend of Ma cosa ci dice il brain (623,663 euros).

Lower figure (but still well above that of 2024) in 2018, when from 3 to 6 May 6,649,228 euros were won, also in that case with an Avengers chapter, given that Endgame obtained 2,813,525 euros in its second weekend, followed by They 1 (also in its second weekend, with 811,479 euros) and Here Come the Profs (754,283 euros on its debut).

On the other hand, this was a weekend with an event that on Saturday alone obtained more than 2,000 euros in average copy, a threshold that was not exceeded over the weekend by any other title. In fact, the data of I’ll be with you, a documentary focusing on Napoli’s 2022-2023 scudetto, is truly excellent, thanks to a second place of 770,213 euros in two days and a fantastic average of 5,135 euros in just 150 cinemas. And to think that there are those who argue that events should not be held on weekends. But if a stock performs so well, why wouldn’t it?

And we come to the first in the ranking, moreover with a good hold compared to the competition (-37%), that is Challengers, which takes home another 792,510 euros, with an average of 1,410 euros and exceeding 3 million in total (3,039,017 euros). This means that in the next few days it will exceed the collection of Call me by your name (3,180,790 euros), even if this does not mean becoming the highest result of a Luca Guadagnino film in Italy (a record that will remain Melissa P with 6,019,385 euros).

However, one cannot rejoice over the fact of The Fall Guy, but on the other hand the American results had already made us understand that this blockbuster (130-150 million dollars budget according to Deadline) would not have made it. The result of the weekend is therefore 668,987 euros and an average of 1,818 euros in 368 cinemas, for a total of 1,196,329 euros, which is in part due to the previews on April 26th (not extraordinary) and the figure for May 1st (this is better). It is worth reminding those who are convinced that only blockbusters make money and average films are useless, it is not an exact science.

After an excellent May 1st in which he finished clearly in the lead, we could have expected something more from the collection of Garfield – A tasty mission, which comes in fourth place with 562,361 euros and 1,255 average in 448 cinemas, with a total of 1,257,401 euros. However, the importance of family films and also their lack is confirmed, given that Kung Fu Panda 4 as of March 21, it had no competition in this area.

From that point on, none of the next six titles in the top ten exceeded 800 euros on average (and all took less than 300,000 euros, from the sixth onwards even results below 200,000), in fact they weren’t even close. In fifth position we have Confidencewhich grosses 287,230, with a significant drop of 59% and an average of 643. At least, the total, 1,390,492 euros, represents a significant result for Italian cinema, the ninth highest national grossing in 2024, but it will reach at least the eighth place, exceeding the figure of Romeo and Juliet, which has currently obtained 1,453,143 euros. However, it will not be possible to reach it Moments of negligible happinessLuchetti’s previous film from 2019, which reached 1,877,302 euros.

It exceeded the overall threshold of two million at the weekend (to be precise, with 2,106,432 euros) Back to Blackwhich grossed another 165,415 euros, down 73% and with an average of 606. Instead, it will try to get close to (but not exceed) that level of two million Civil Warwhich conquered another 158,930 euros, reaching 1,684,968 euros for now, thanks to a decline of 67% and an average of 621.

Most interesting speech for Wim Wenders documentary, Anselm, which grossed 134,054 euros, placing it in eighth place, with an average of 745 in 180 cinemas, for a total so far of 256,321 euros. It has exceeded one million (it is in fact at 1,066,938 euros), down by 65% and an average of 650, Mischief at homeable to collect another 130,677 euros.

As anticipated last Monday, Ghostbusters – Glacial Menace he did better over the course of the week than his predecessor Ghostbusters: Legacywhich had reached 2,468,804 euros, thanks to a total of 2,720,348 euros, a result due to a last weekend of 122,699 euros, with an average of 601 and a decrease of 79%.

Just outside the top ten (and aiming to reach seven million total this week or next at the latest), A world apartwhich reached 6,894,456 euros, with a weekend of 119,807 euros and an average of 560, with a drop of 73%.

Other debuts outside the top ten, starting with the unsatisfactory figure of Six brothers, which opened with 119,798 euros and an average of 489 in 245 cinemas. Much better average (1,300 euros), also thanks to only 38 copies, however Once upon a time in Bhutanwhich obtains 49,392 euros, for a total of 73,599 euros.

We conclude as usual with some totals of films outside the top ten. Kung Fu Panda 4 it reached 11,535,169 euros; Godzilla and Kong – The New Empire to 4,137,850 euros; Omen – The origin of the omen to 1,072,964 euros; Zamora to 647,597 euros; The president’s wife to 127,232 euros; Spy at 294,524 euros, Glory! to 471,657 euros; And the party continues! at 278,053 euros.
