The Territorial Information Systems sector of the Union of Valle del Savio Municipalities was awarded the “Risk Management 2024” award awarded for the Road Accidents project with the use of GIS, WebGIS, dashboard and Open Geodata systems on the occasion of the Esri Italia conference, the most important event for businesses, public administrations, researchers, professionals and enthusiasts of GIS technologies, which has gathered for over twenty the interest of thousands of people for years.
For the 2024 edition, ample space was given to best practices on the topic of risks linked to natural and anthropic phenomena. Among the topics addressed: climate change, environmental risk, seismic and volcanic risk, monitoring and management of emergencies, accidents and road risks. An opportunity to discover how geographical technologies are essential for the management, monitoring and prevention of climate and environmental emergencies but also of risk situations.
The SIT Service of the Union of Valle del Savio Municipalities, in collaboration with the Mobility Service, has been carrying out a detailed survey of road accidents in the Cesena area since 2005, in close collaboration with the police forces (Traffic Police, Municipal Police and Carabinieri). . This is a job that requires particular commitment for the municipal administration but also a fundamental tool for knowing, understanding and indicating priority and motivated choices to reduce the possible structural, functional and behavioral inefficiencies that contribute to determining road accidents. The aspects that make this investigation (which develops from 1998 to 2023) valuable are: the precise georeferencing and the targeted study of the territory through the creation of various maps.
The georeferencing of incidents, using GIS tools, is probably the most innovative aspect of the project and certainly fundamental for a targeted study of the initiatives implemented and/or possible in the future. This activity consists in the precise representation on the map of the place where the single accident occurred.
This survey, carried out annually, is fundamental for the municipal administration in order to highlight the “critical points”, i.e. places with a high accident rate, with the aim of defining mobility interventions aimed at improving road safety; highlight the moments (times, days, periods of the year) characterized by critical issues to evaluate greater control interventions; support the mobility service in the adoption of detailed plans for road safety, where accident analysis is a very important factor.
