RFI awards the works for the Brindisi intermodal hub

Italian Railway Network has awarded the contract for the construction of the Brindisi intermodal hub to the group of companies made up of Ici Italiana Costruzioni Infrastrutture, Esim and the temporary group of professionals made up of Progin and 3BA. The value of the contract exceeds 33 million euros, with a significant part of the financing coming from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan funds.

The project involves the construction of a new station, called Brindisi Intermodale, equipped with four tracks of 750 meters each for the arrival and departure of freight trains. This station will be connected to the Adriatic route through a new single-track electrified line, which will connect to the new “Brindisi Sud” crossroads (PC).

The main objective of the intermodal node is divert freight traffic away from the urban centre, while improving logistical operations linked to the port of Brindisi and its industrial area behind the port. The project includes the completion and technological equipment of the new station, which will be fundamental for streamlining the train terminalization activities serving the port, the industrial area and, in the future, the retroport intermodal logistics plate.

Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO and general director of RFI, underlined the strategic importance of this project: “An important piece that aims to distance goods traffic from the urban fabric, with its centralized arrival and departure platforms for freight trains, thus also encouraging relations between the Port of Brindisi and the Mediterranean. An increasingly sustainable freight transport, therefore, which opens southern Italy towards Europe. Furthermore, the works planned on the Brindisi hub will allow an increasingly efficient connection with the Adriatic line, a connection that will bring the South closer to the rest of Europe”. The activation of the work is expected by 2026.
