A case of diphtheria at Udine Hospital.
He was in Udine hospital a strain of Corynebacterium diphtheriae isolatedthe bacterium responsible for diphtheria, in a patient admitted to intensive care. The news was communicated by the health director of the central Friuli university health company, David Turello.
“The pathogen was isolated in a patient – Turello explained to Ansa – and now it is in epidemiological surveillance was carried out by the Prevention Department, aimed at containing the spread of the bacterium through monitoring the contacts had by the patient”.
Turello underlined that this is an exceptional case, since no other cases of diphtheria had been detected in Friuli Venezia Giulia in recent decades. “It shouldn’t cause concern – he reassured – because all the necessary measures have been adopted”. The health director also reminded the importance of diphtheria vaccinationmandatory by law, and suggested that a Vaccine booster should be carried out every ten yearsas for tetanus.
