Healthcare, railway retreat, but also culture, economic growth, young people and sports facilities. These are just some of the points of the electoral program of the Democratic Party, which will be the protagonist at the polls on 8 and 9 June with one of its candidates for mayor: Cristian Fanesi, frontman of the centre-left in the Democratic Party, who will also be able to count on the 24 Democratic candidates.

The list includes nine women and also several young people, including a twenty-year-old. The Democrats’ priority is now to share their city project. “We have come back from a long journey – said the Fano party secretary Renato Claudio Minardi -, with the primaries from which we emerged even more united. We have a good team, and we are ready to win in the runoff. The centre-left candidate is an expression of this democratic opportunity that we have offered to the citizens, who have personally chosen who will try to become the new mayor of the city. A Fano that has grown a lot in these ten years, also thanks to 250 million in investments. To criticism of ‘too many’ construction sites, I reply that they are nothing more than proof of an improvement underway. Of course, there are still many things to do, and we want to do them together.”

The PD believes that the only real opponent is the centre-right candidate Luca Serfilippi, who still holds the role of majority regional councillor. Hence the double challenge posed to him by the Dems, on the healthcare front and the rolling back of the railway. “What future for Santa Croce – asked Minardi – after the elimination of the hospital and the consequent resignations? How many beds? With which personnel will we continue, and with what specializations?”. The secretary recalled that in the Marche region as many as 9.7% of citizens have given up treatment, more than two percentage points less than the national average. “This situation was created by those who do not love Fano or the north of the Marche,” added Minardi.

The horse of this battle will be Santa Croce head of breast medicine Cesare Magalotti, who is among the party’s candidates. “Seeing the hospital where I work for thirteen or fourteen hours a day in ‘Fuori dal choir’ made me feel ashamed. We are losing doctors – he explained -, a deliberate structural problem, caused by incorrect planning. Now, however, it is not a question of looking for who stole the jam first, but of recreating that jam. They asked me to help out, even though I’m not a politician. I remain a surgeon, but when I look in the mirror I want to see a person reflected in it who knows they have tried to change things. Because the situation is not yet irrecoverable, but if we continue like this we will reach the point of no return. We are at the limit – he commented -, and soon the patients will realize it too”. But as mentioned, the PD’s challenges in Serfilippi are two. In addition to healthcare, the rolling back of the railway, which according to Minardi “cannot be renounced for the Region’s games”.

The Democrats’ program then focuses on culture, tourism, the return of Lysippus, Romanism and Vitruvius, “the theater which in recent years has been well managed and has achieved great results”. And the new building, also for cultural events and conferences, the definitive change of ownership of the Paolini Barracks which appears to be imminent. Without forgetting the project for the new Viblioteca Federiciana and the cycle path along the former Fano-Urbino railway, on which “they have hidden the feasibility study regarding the possible reopening”.

Beyond the program, the team, to which candidate Fanesi wished good luck. “Where there is the PD there is the centre-left – he said – which will be the protagonist of an important political battle. We are the only ones who talk about certain topics. We are the only ones looking to the future, while the other coalitions are still too focused on the past. Fano must become the best city to live in.” Here are the names on the list: Oscar Ascenzi, Tommaso Bittoni, Carla Cecchetelli, Sara Cucchiarini, Maissa Fall, Alessandro Edoardo Fichera, Giovanni Forte, Alessandra Giagnolini, Cesare Magalotti, Derna Maggioli, Erica Magi, Alessandra Mei, Giovanna Paci, Marilina Pianosi, Barbara Pusineri, Maurizio Tarini, Dimitri Tinti, Gioele Tombari, Enzo Tonelli, Omar Toni, Riccardo Tonti Bandini, Rezart Vela, Gualtiero Zito.

Several of them spoke during the long presentation. The interventions also include a focus on mental health, a topic for which not enough resources would be reserved, with repercussions also at staff level. Erica Magi herself, on behalf of the young portion of the list, cited mental health as an important issue also for her generation, which among other things does not want to be associated only with parties and the desire to have fun, but also with the desire to better education and decent work.

The outgoing councilor Sara Cucchiarini showed a certain optimism. “I perceive a growing trust towards the coalition and the candidate for mayor – you said –, also because we started calmly but in the last few days we have built a structured team, and I also say this for the lists of colleagues. That of the PD is very strong, with exponents who are an expression of our battles. Meanwhile, only broadsides arrive from the centre-right which however remain in the air. I would not like to have to repeat again the large investments made for city safety, including the hiring of new local police officers and the installation of new cameras, which before the centre-left took office there were 4, while now there are 170. In regards to everything this fuss about unaccompanied foreign minors, I would also like to point out that this situation is the result of the policies of Salvini and the League”. Cucchiarini then announced that all that was missing was the formalization for the transfer of the Paolini barracks to the Municipality. “And this – she said – is a result of the PD”.

Another councilor, same trust. “The game is wide open – commented Dimitri Tinti -, now we have to work on sharing the program, and we have what it takes to achieve this. The PD is the linchpin of this coalition.” The holder of the delegation for community welfare then declared that he is proud of what has been done so far for the social sector, with investments that have gone from 7 to 12 million. Tinti then accused the Region of having made laws against the territory, and “councillor Serfilippi should give us an account of it”. From the president of the city council Carla Cecchetelli came clarifications on the importance of supporting economic activities, while other candidates shifted the spotlight to the importance of the culture and ethics of care as a main road also against youth hardship. On Saturday at Politeama further information on the centre-left coalition’s program.
