decline in prevalence, new measures and requests to the Ministry

Caserta – Two years after the launch of the mandatory plan for the eradication of bovine and buffalo infectious diseases in Campania, there has been a significant decline in the prevalence of brucellosis in the province of Caserta. Despite the substantial stability of the buffalo herd, the data show a reduction in the disease compared to 2021, when it exceeded 21%.

Commissioner Cortellessa and the eradication plan

The extraordinary commissioner Luigi Cortellessa, involved in the fight against brucellosis which has affected buffalo farms in the Caserta area for years, underlines the effectiveness of the regional plan. Despite the protests of the farmers, who obtained the appointment of a government commissioner to support the Region, Cortellessa highlights the progress made.

Compensations, reclamations and new measures

Compensation for the culling of infected animals is paid regularly, barring impeding causes. Maintenance work on the reclamation channels is also continuing to reduce the risks of overflow and damage to companies.

A new free campaign of collecting, treating and sanitizing manure from farms infected with brucellosis and tuberculosis is coming, thanks to the new bio-digestion plants under construction.

Requests to the Ministry of Health

Commissioner Cortellessa forwarded two requests to the Ministry of Health:

Authorization for vaccination of adult buffaloes. The Ministry has granted the extension only up to 12 months of age.
Self-control with SAR test The request was rejected by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Teramo due to current national regulations. Cortellessa had asked for a temporary exemption, with procedures to expand the possibilities for self-control and guarantee mandatory prophylaxis.
Efforts to eradicate brucellosis continue

Despite the difficulties and resistance, Commissioner Cortellessa and the Campania Region continue to implement measures to eradicate brucellosis and protect public and animal health. Collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the adoption of new strategies are crucial to achieve this goal.
