Neglected city parks, uneven pavements, bins overflowing every day, abandonment of bulky items and islands of waste in some areas where there used to be nerds in the areas now served by door-to-door. The promise of decorum in the capital seems like a curse, waved with hope mixed with a pinch of resignation by every mayor who takes his place in Piazza del Popolo. Maintenance remains a complicated matter, the neglect of citizens is an irreparable flaw and waste management is a weak link that contributes, day after day, to restoring the image of a city that has become accustomed to degradation.
The situation remains critical and could remain for a long time in the same state as the images that we cyclically publish (of overflowing bins, waste abandoned or deposited by traders and citizens and not collected in various areas of the city) together with reports from citizens, at least in terms of waste. A complex and delicate sector in which the Municipality seems to have its hands tied waiting for a solution that is neither quick nor simple. First it will be necessary to go through a review of the ABC contract, the approval of the economic-financial plan of the waste service and the new industrial plan, as explained several times by the environment councilor Franco Addonizio. And to change the collection system in the remaining areas of the city not yet served by door-to-door which coincide with the core within the first ring road, we will still have to wait until 2025.
There is no hope that this step will happen sooner in order to comply with the technical times of a consultation process between the Municipality and the ABC company which so far has not been linear judging by the slow times. Looking at the website of the special company, it can be seen that in 2023 the total municipal solid waste collected in the municipal area of Latina was 61,401 tonnes and that the separated waste amounted to 52.5%. The data refers to the waste actually collected by ABC Latina and sent to the various plants, excluding the contribution of domestic composting calculated directly by the Municipality of Latina in accordance with the guidelines for calculating the percentage of separate collection of urban waste.
