“MAYORS MUST BLOCK THE DANGERS WE ARE FACING”

A demonstration in Latina against electrosmog: “We have sent a letter to the mayors to put a stop to this situation”

On Saturday 11 May, as part of the “Latina Libera” demonstration, an account was given of some initiatives to block the raising of the limits of electromagnetic emissions foreseen by the law which came into force on 30 April 1924.

“In Italy – explains Nunzia De Masi for Latina Libera – there is a real “techno revolt” underway on this issue, citizens are rebelling on all sides and there is great dissent against the law that the government wanted to impose . I use the term “impose” because numerous scientists, researchers and technicians had sent written appeals to the government not to implement this change and many associations and bodies had implemented protests, mobilisations, sending continuous emails to parliamentarians and ministers. All in vain: the government went ahead with its intention and now we find ourselves with increased exposure limits.

A real imposition on Italians also because the law provided that mayors and governors of the regions would be summoned to express their opinion, but this was not done. Furthermore, there are many legal cases that begin every day against telephone company managers for having placed a repeater perhaps too close to some homes, in front of schools or kindergartens and similar protests. Why doesn’t the government listen to the voice of citizens? ‎

I make it clear that raising the limits, according to expert technicians, has no reason to exist for the functioning of everything we are using, such as PCs, cell phones, etc. However, it has been estimated that with this law telephone companies can currently save around 5 billion euros (I am talking about the national territory). For this reason, the famous “precautionary principle” and prevention according to which the harmlessness of certain increases is expected to be ascertained before implementing them has been undermined. ‎Instead, no research has demonstrated that 5G is not harmful and in the meantime the number of cases won by citizens has also increased significantly, which have also provided for large compensations for those who have been damaged by prolonged and improper use of compulsory mobile phones, for work reasons. And there has also been an increase in sentences ordering the removal or shutdown of disputed cell towers in several cities. ‎

Now the limits for electromagnetic emissions have gone from 6 V to 15 meters without any of the institutes responsible for issuing the authorization or bodies that had to check that this did not cause harm to the population having given a positive opinion, on the contrary, the Ministry of Health for example has replied that no documentation was requested by the government. We remember that at the Ministry of Health on 20 June 2023, one of the many mobilizations to contest this law, 65,000 signatures and numerous studies proving the damage to health caused by electromagnetic waves were delivered by the Italian stop 5G alliance. However, these appeals, like those of the 42 scientists who had written, also went unheeded.

Now Italians are turning to mayors, who are primarily responsible according to the constitution for citizens’ health. All the mayors of Italy have received from us environmentalist associations a PEC with attached documentation of all the damage that could occur, with the request for a moratorium: that is, blocking the increase with a union ordinance until it is proven that 5G is not harmful, that is, exactly the opposite of what has been proven so far.

Many mayors have already taken action by making this ordinance executive, but unfortunately the mayor of Latina is not among them. In this city we are still waiting for the antenna master plan to be brought to the city council, which has been ready for years and has already been paid for by the municipal administration, which however continually blocks every time it is about to reach the final piece: approval.

We remember that the current mayor had been a signatory of this master plan before being elected, while now we have had no response to our requests so that the city can finally protect itself through this very important document, which contains extensive protections for areas such as schools, hospitals, homes of rest and above all kindergartens. This is of enormous urgency precisely in light of the fact that emission limits are now being significantly increased.”
