Collapse at the Campania Shopping Center: area seized and near tragedy

In the central square of the Campania Shopping Center in Marcianise, fate played a lucky hand due to the collapse that occurred late in the evening. The Caserta Fire Brigade, acting on behalf of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, placed seals on an area that could well have been the stage of a huge tragedy. A false ceiling collapsed, taking cables and systems with it, but fortunately, no one was hurt. The Commander of the Caserta Fire Brigade, Paolo Massimi, describes the incident as a tragedy avoided by a miracle. The collapse occurred shortly after 10pm, when the shops were closing and only a few customers were still in the building.

“We could have told a different and very tragic story if the collapse had occurred a few dozen minutes earlier,” reflects Massimi. His detachment, together with the team from the Marcianise detachment, responded promptly to the emergency call, also sending a judicial police team to investigate the causes of the collapse.

The deputy of the Green-Left Alliance, Francesco Emilio Borrelli, does not hide his concern and indignation at the incident at the Campania Shopping Center. “A tragedy avoided by a miracle,” he says, underlining that if the collapse had occurred during rush hour, with the shops open and families crowding the aisles in full swing, the toll would have been devastating. Borrelli demands a rapid investigation to determine the causes of the collapse and establish any responsibilities. “Someone will have to explain how all this was possible, because what happened is shocking,” he states firmly.

The MP also raises doubts about the timeliness and completeness of the checks carried out on the structure. “I hope at least that the necessary checks have been carried out on the entire structure and not just on the part affected by the collapse, so as to avoid a very dangerous domino effect,” he says, expressing concern for people’s safety. “The safety of people must be a priority and must be guaranteed at all costs,” concludes Borrelli.
