#3 Orange Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

SYRACUSE, NY – No. 3 Syracuse defeated No. 14 Stony Brook, 15-10, at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament. The Orange advance to the quarterfinals for the fifth-straight year where they will host Yale on Thursday, May 16 at the JMA Wireless Dome.

Kate Mashewske broke the single-game school record with 20 draw controls, helping Syracuse win 22-of-29 in the game. It matches the highest single-game total in a Division I game this season. Mashewske ranks fifth on the all-time Division I leader list for draw controls with 548.

Emma Tyrrell led the ‘Cuse offense with five goals go along with an assist, while Olivia Adamson also finished with six points on three goals and three assists. Overall, eight different players scored at least one goal.

Defensively, Delaney Sweitzer finished with eight saves, while Coco Vandiver had two ground balls and two caused turnovers. The unit limited the nation’s leading scorer and Tewaaraton Award finalist Ellie Massera to just three points on two goals and an assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The teams traded goals to start the game before Tyrrell scored his first of the day at the 12:20 mark of the first quarter. The goal gave Syracuse (15-5) the lead for good and sparked the Orange on a 5-1 scoring run that gave ‘Cuse a 6-2 lead after the first quarter.

The Seawolves (18-3) fought back in the second quarter and were within two at 7-5 with 6:40 remaining. Tyrrell again sparked the Orange with her third goal of the day. Tyrrell’s goal was the first of four unanswered for Syracuse, which led, 11-5, at halftime.

Stony Brook wouldn’t go away and a free-position goal by Alexandra Fusco brought the Seawolves within four, 12-8, with 2:30 to go in the third quarter. Once again it was Tyrrell that answered as she scored twice during a 3-0 ‘Cuse scoring run that put the game out of reach.

OF NOTES

The Orange improved their NCAA Tournament record to 26-20, including a 15-2 mark in second-round action.

Katie Goodale tied the school career record for caused turnovers, increasing her career total to 101. In addition, she posted her 100th career ground ball. Natalie Smith also reached a milestone as she recorded her 100th career point.
