A old story, a film already seen. TO Moncalieri the local police ‘pinches’ the crafty drivers and those who do not respect the rules of the highway code, but the difference is substantial between how much should be collected and how much actually passes into the Municipality’s coffers.
810 thousand euros instead of 1.7 million
The numbers of fines they speak clearly. In the first four months of 2024, over 315 thousand reports were issued for an ascertained amount of 1.7 million. But of this money, just over 800 thousand euros have currently entered the municipal coffers. 810 thousand, to be precise. Less than 50%, less than one in two fines, in short.
As always when we talk about fines for violations of the highway code, the numbers become important. The outstanding amount remains high, which the agents have been fighting for years, complete with injunctions and appeals to the Revenue Agency. Also because whoever pays usually pays immediately. While those who don’t often hope that the administration will forget about it or give up on waging the war of appeals and injunctions.
Numbers in line with those of 2023
This is demonstrated by the fact that out of the 810 thousand euros collected, 712 thousand are the fines paid by citizens in a reduced amount, i.e. those that are paid within five days of the dispute to benefit from the 30% discount. A collection that is in line with what was ascertained in 2023, when the fines chapter brought in 6.1 million. But even last year those who actually put their hands on the portfolio were a minority, given that a credit fund of 3.9 million was foreseen, which at the moment remains difficult and uncertain to recover.
The trend doesn’t seem to have changed in this first phase of the new year, despite t-red and local agents often nailing the crafty ones. But this is not enough.
