Extreme solar storm hits the Earth and the sky turns purple

Late yesterday afternoon the Earth was hit by an extreme geomagnetic storm, level G4, the second highest predicted by scientists. The storm was caused by the activity of a gigantic grouping of sunspots that extends for 200 thousand kilometers on the surface of the Sun, shooting energy-charged particles into space that hit and alter the Earth’s magnetic field.

Already late yesterday evening in many areas of the Earth the sky was colored pink and purple, a spectacle visible especially in the darkest areas. But the aurora borealis at latitudes much lower than usual are not the only consequence: especially today, disturbances are expected in electricity networks, satellite navigation systems such as GPS, the activity of satellites and other space vehicles .
