The works for the reclamation of the Scordovillo site in Lamezia Terme are now close. The Roma camp should be dismantled soon. They guarantee it to the municipality where technicians are already working to get the project started. Municipality, Region and Government Commissioner trace, in this phase, the final lines of a intervention plan worth 28 million euros. Eight of these come from Pnrr funds for the reclamation to be carried out by 2026, 20 million represent a direct intervention by the Calabria Region for primary and secondary infrastructure and urbanization works.
The most delicate step now concerns, in concrete terms, the housing arrangements of the Roma, that is, the management of the dismantling of a ghetto where 96 families live for a total of 411 people.
The situation is thorny and the commissioner Giuseppe Vadala will have to manage what is not only the reclamation of a landfill but also translates into the transfer of these families, who no one in Lamezia has ever managed to convince to abandon the field.
It seems that, in any case, Aterp is working to find new housing solutions. The mayor of the city Paolo Mascaro, reiterating the imminence of the start of the works, had assured that he would leave the municipality after opening this construction site: six buildings with sixteen apartments each they should take the place of the barracks.
«After many promises – declares Salvatore De Biase, city coordinator of Forza Italia, the same party as the mayor – that of the Roma camp has become a priority ministerial and regional”. The Scordovillo area, over time, has expanded from 14 thousand to 25 thousand square meters, until it reaches the borders of the Lamezia Hospital. Not to mention the problems linked to waste fires, toxic fumes, the very high level of pollution and the risks to the health of citizens. «A problem that has been unresolved for years and is now underway to a definitive solution – De Biase continues –. There is currently a positive synergy between the commissioner, the Region, the Municipality and other bodies. And then we have a general from the Carabinieri, a figure who will certainly be a guarantor of decision-making and transparency. In short, concrete facts».
The polluted area of the Scordovillo Roma camp must be reclaimed within two years. We are working on the so-called characterization plan, on the risk analysis, on the definitive design to achieve the reclamation and permanent safety.
Almost three months have passed since the first inspection by Commissioner Vadalà accompanied by the Public Prosecutor, Salvatore Curcio, the Mayor, Paolo Mascaro and the Prefect Enrico Ricci. De Biase assures that «the regional departments, within their competence, will operate on two fronts: the construction of public housing and the launch of projects aimed at social inclusion». According to what we learn, the resolution that kicks off the part of the intervention on Scordovillo entrusted to the Region was signed by the Public Works department and provides for the assignment to Aterp, in agreement with the Municipality of Lamezia, of the construction of the new units housing. Educational and creative workshops for minors are also plannedthe activation of educational and creative workshops in classes, orientation and support for job searches, a path to promote knowledge of opportunities and bureaucracy for Roma who wish to promote forms of self-entrepreneurship, as well as social-health workshops for families family members.
