Employment forecasts: 30 thousand hirings expected in Piedmont in May

The trend appears positive both on a monthly level, with 1,860 more entries compared to May 2023, and on a quarterly basis. The difficulty of obtaining remains high, affecting 49.8% of the expected revenue.

The analysis

There are approximately 30,010 contracts planned by Piedmontese companies for May 2024, a value which rises to 92,180 if the entire May-July 2024 quarter is considered.

The trend appears positive both on a monthly level (+1,860 entries compared to May 2023, for a trend change of +6.6%), and on a quarterly basis (+3,300 hires compared to the same quarter of the previous year). At an overall national level, there was an expansion of approximately 27 thousand units compared to May 2023 (+5.8%) and of almost 35 thousand units over the corresponding quarter of 2023 (+2.2%)

Entries in Piedmont in May 2024 represent 22.0% of the 136,300 hirings expected in the North West and 6.1% of the total national ones (approximately 494 thousand).

These are some of the data contained in the Excelsior Information System Bulletin, created by Unioncamere and the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies, based on interviews carried out on a sample of companies in the period 18 March – 3 April 2024.

55.7% of the hirings scheduled for the month of May concern micro and small-sized companies (1-49 employees), 20.3% medium-sized companies (50-249 employees) and 24.1% large companies (250 employees and more).

76.6% of the revenues planned by Piedmontese companies will concern employees (decreasing value compared to April 2024), 16.7% temporary workers (increasing), 1.9% collaborators and 4.9% others non-employed workers.

The demand for work also in May 2024 is driven by fixed-term contracts with 57% of scheduled earnings (down by one point compared to the previous month), followed by permanent contracts with 28% of cases (down by three points on April 2024). Apprenticeship represents the chosen type of contract for 9% of revenue, while the other contracts hold a residual share of 6% of the overall regional total.

Of the 30,010 entries expected in Piedmont in May 2024, 15% are made up of graduates (increasing by one point compared to April 2024), 30% are graduates (down by 2 points compared to the previous month), qualifications or diplomas professional and compulsory education account for 36% and 18% respectively.

Considering the data for the May-July 2024 quarter, it emerges that services always form the largest portion of labor demand with 61,220 entries, 66.4% of the total (2,140 units more than in the same quarter of the previous year) . The industry expects 30,960 entries, generating 33.6% of total demand and marking an increase of approximately 1,160 units compared to the May-July 2024 period. Among services, the sector that will absorb the largest portion of the 92,180 entries expected in the quarter May-July 2024 is tourism (accommodation and catering services, tourist services accommodation and catering services, tourist services), with 13,920 entries (15.1% of the total), followed by trade, with 13,130 entries and a share of 14 .2% of the total and from personal services, for which the companies interviewed assume they will have to make 11,860 hires (12.9%).

Within the industrial sector, the construction sector stands out, with 7,910 new entries expected in the period under review, and the mechanical and electronic industries, with 6,810 hires in the quarter and a share of 7.4% of the total.

25% of the revenue expected in May 2024 in our region will be allocated to commercial and service professions, 21% to managers, specialists and technicians. Skilled workers and plant operators will produce 29% of revenue and only 9% will be represented by office workers. Generic profiles will make up 16% of the month’s hires.

More than one in three hires (35%) will involve young people under 30. In 21% of cases, companies plan to hire immigrant staff.

For approximately 61.8% of entries, specific professional experience or experience in the same sector is required. 20.8% of new hires will be asked to apply creative and innovative solutions, 14.0% will coordinate other people.

42% of revenue will be included in the production of goods and service provision area (down 2 points compared to the previous month), 19% in the commercial and sales areas, 17% in the technical and design areas. Logistics will absorb approximately 11% of the hirings scheduled for May 2024, while the administrative and management areas will generate a share of 5% and 6% respectively.

The mismatch between job supply and demand remains high: in May, 49.8% of the professional profiles sought were difficult to find, a share 2.6 percentage points higher than a year earlier, but stable compared to April 2024 Furthermore, the incidence of job positions at risk of remaining unfilled in Piedmont is higher than the national average (48.2%).

The difficulties in finding are linked primarily to the lack of candidates (32.8%, up compared to May 2023), followed by their inadequate preparation (11.9%, stable share compared to a year ago).
