It was inaugurated yesterday at the International Center of Photography of Palermoat the Cantieri Culturali della Zisa, the exhibition «Neapolitans of Partenope» of the photographer Maurizio Leonardi. The photographic exhibition is curated by the association «Palermofoto® ACSI» with the patronage of the Municipality of Palermo.

After stopping in Brittany, Paris, Arles and others PAN (Palazzo Arti Naples) in 2021, Leonardi has decided to bring his personal vision of the Neapolitan city to Palermo. Leonardi’s exhibition consists of thirty photographs in black and whitecompletely printed in analog on baryta paper, starting from the original negatives.

Maurizio Leonardi, born in Naples in 1971, is a photographer with a cosmopolitan spirit who has chosen to reside in France for several years. With surprising simplicity, the artist manages to capture the essence of the multiple realities that he passes through on his journey, from the evocative landscapes of Palermo to the lively streets of Paris, from vibrant Spain to colorful Colombia. Sicily is a second home for him, and after spending three years working in this magical place, he chose the city of Palermo to tell again his Naples.

The works on display portray characters they embody the Neapolitan soulwhich Leonardi tells through his gaze directed towards someone Nostalgic Naples. The subjects are often posed, but despite this, they appear “natural”, as if the lens disappeared and it was the photographer’s gaze itself that captured the image. The settings that serve as the backdrop to Leonardi’s photographs are equally significant: sometimes iconic places such as Marechiaro, other times simple walls of alleys, and in other cases natural landscapes of great beauty, as in the photo which shows a naked figure among the smoke of the Solfatara. The integration between scene and subject is spectacular and engaging, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the artist’s personal vision of one Timeless Naples.

The exposition «Neapolitans of Partenope» of the Neapolitan photographer Maurizio Leonardi can be visited for free at International Center of Photography of Palermountil the May 29thevery day from 10.00 to 18.00.
