Youth gangs are present in 73 Italian provinces (mostly in the Center and North): the Criminalpol report

There are 73 Italian provinces that in the two-year period 2022-2023 recorded “sporadic violent or deviant activities carried out by youth gangs”. This is what emerges from the report “Juvenile crime and youth gangs” created by the Criminal Analysis Service of the Central Directorate of the Criminal Police presented today, Friday 10 May, in Rome. According to the study, baby gangs are present in most Italian regions, with a slight prevalence in the Center and North compared to the South. But, “in very rare cases” – we read in the report, “groups with a defined hierarchy have been recorded”. The gangs are made up of around 10 boys between 15 and 24 years old. Furthermore, these are groups characterized by a predominantly Italian or foreign nationality (first or second generation). In the majority of cases, the youth gangs active in the territories in the last two years – the study specifies – “have carried out acts of bullying, fights, beatings and injuries, acts of vandalism and disturbance of public peace”. But also “thefts in public streets or in commercial establishments and drug dealing”. However, the predominant activity is represented by “harassment towards peers”, we read. According to the study, children often come from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds or with critical family backgrounds.
