Uil research: accidents decreasing in Veneto

According to research carried out by Uil, in the Veneto, accidents at work are decreasing.

Accidents at work in Veneto are down by 8.5%

Roberto Toigo, general secretary of Uil Veneto: “Veneto has commissioned a job: the CSS, a study center on accidents at work to which we refer. We did something new because we wanted to compare accidents and deaths at work in relation to hours worked and not on absolute numbers.”

“We discover a positive thing, even if any injury is not good and any death at work is dramatic. We have data that represents a drop of 8.5% in workplace accidents compared to a national average of 2.8%. The sore point is the deaths at work. Unfortunately, we appreciate an improvement of almost 15% in the last 3 years, but there is certainly still a lot to do.”

A sign of hope regarding workplace accidents but national challenges persist

Pierpaolo Bombardieri, Uil general secretary, claims: “The data we analyzed today demonstrate that in Veneto there is an improvement with respect to hours worked. Over the years there is a reduction in fatal accidents, even if there is an increase in traditional diseases. These are data that give us hope and that, essentially, give confidence in the work, especially here in Veneto, that our managers and executives do.”

“It is the right path and, obviously, it is inserted in a still dramatic national context on which we must reflect because much more needs to be done. 1041 deaths in one year and, above all, 500 thousand accidents at work. It is a long and demanding job, in which we must continue to demand everyone’s attention and commitment.”

The major causes of accidents

The words of Rocco Palombella, Uil general secretary: “We have verified that there is a link between the increase in working hours and accidents. Accidents occur mainly in the second part of the day, they occur during overtime hours and they mainly occur in the procurement and subcontracting system.”

“It also occurs from an employment relationship point of view. The more precariousness there is, the more fixed-term contracts and temporary contracts are identified, and the more this level of injury increases. It also increases in different areas of the country. In the South, where there is more precariousness, the indices are higher companies in the North, however, the index is lower. I am increasingly convinced that we cannot address this very delicate issue from the point of view of either indices or numbers. There is a theme: you can’t die working.”
