A novelty in the therapeutic field at the Ospedale del Mare made it possible to resolve acute cholecystitis: the insertion of an endoscopic ultrasonographic drainage (EUS-guided) for the treatment of acute cholecystitis in a fragile patient of 92 years oldconsidered not to be a candidate for traditional surgery.

The therapeutic intervention was performed by Leonardo De Lucadirector of the Operational Unit, Anna Del Prete gastroenterologist, Luciana Ferrara anesthetist assisted by the nursing team coordinated by Mario Piscitelli.

«The minimally invasive technique was successfully carried out, inserting under ultrasound guidance, a biconical self-expanding metal prosthesis (LAMS), i.e. a small metal mesh tube composed of nickel and titanium, to create a communication between the gallbladder and the duodenum, with immediate clinical benefit for the patient – as explained in a note – The positioning of the EUS-guided drainage of the gallbladder it was the result of a scrupulous evaluation of the case by the multidisciplinary team made up of gastroenterologists, surgeons and anesthetists, thus underlining the crucial importance of continuous research and innovation in the field of medicine. The patient who passed the therapeutic intervention brilliantly was discharged a few days ago.”
