A growing phenomenon of scams is emerging on social media, and Facebook in particular it has become fertile ground for these illicit operations. Users are seduced by ads offering the sale of suitcases supposedly abandoned in airport storage for more than six months. These adverts, tempting and deceptive, promise suitcases at a negligible cost of 2 euros, ensuring delivery to any area of the country and guaranteeing a right of return up to thirty days from the date of purchase. Scam ads present messages such as:

Suitcase lost by airport customers, for only 2 euros. Suitcases that have been in storage for more than a year must be disposed of. The airport doesn’t want to pay the concession fee for the next quarter and is selling lost luggage left in storage for just 2 euros! Online only.

These messages are supported by digitally manipulated images showing warehouses full of luggage, with the aim of simulating credibility and connections with well-known airports. However, some inconsistenciessuch as the use of airport signs other than those mentioned, immediately betray the fraudulent nature of the adverts.

Strategies to avoid falling into the traps of online scams

Scams of this nature are nothing new, as similar ploys have already been noticed on Facebook in the past. Furthermore, the use of false profiles posing as representatives of well-known airports, both Italian such as Fiumicino and Marco Polo in Venice, and international, was observed. These scammers aim to steal sensitive financial data, such as credit card numbers. Here are some tips on how to protect yourself from such frauds:

  3. Do not disclose personal data: Avoid revealing your banking information, credit card numbers or other personal information in response to unverified online ads or requests.
  4. Choose secure payment methods: Opt for payment tools that offer protections against fraud, such as PayPal or credit cards with dispute and refund systems.
