General school strike: demonstration in Cagliari

The problem of differentiated autonomy

“We are here under the Regional Council because there is a problem that also concerns the Council and it is that relating to differentiated autonomy. We believe that differentiated autonomy, in addition to increasing problems for welfare and healthcare, also brings problems for schools, because we will have twenty-one ways of teaching and twenty-one regional school organizations.”

The renewal of contracts

“The strike was also called for the renewal of the contract: we are in fact asking for a 300 euro increase per month because there has been inflation which has completely eroded the purchasing power of salaries. Staff must be motivated and also encouraged.

We ask, in addition to the increases, that all rights be recognised, as well as equal pay for teachers in primary schools and in second and first grade primary schools. We must have the courage to recognize that teachers in nursery and primary schools work longer hours and the responsibilities are the same. Only in Italy is there this difference.”

Food stamps and periods of precarious employment

“We also ask that meal vouchers be given to ATA staff and school collaborators who often work for more than six hours. We still ask that all temporary staff, including teachers, be granted periods of temporary employment, because today only four years are legally recognised, the others are only recognized for 2/3 or 1/3. It’s something we don’t accept.”

Safety in schools

“There is no adequate preparation: it often happens that workers are not equipped with the mandatory aids and this is something that in this period, where we witness deaths at work every day, is absolutely not good. We therefore ask that the accidents that unfortunately often occur do not occur in schools too.”

The INVALSI test

“Yesterday the INVALSI test was taken and if, at first, it was considered a useful tool because it could provide an overview of the situation regarding the students’ preparation and evaluate the regional differences, today the test will be part of the students’ curricula and it was equal to a state exam. The INVALSI test also revealed a fact: those who are poor are often less able to follow the school programme.”
