9 May Europe Day – Municipality of Cuneo

Like every year, Europe Day is celebrated on 9 May, a date chosen because it marks the anniversary of the historic Schuman Declaration with which the then French Foreign Minister proposed the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (the institutional embryo of the current European Union).

This year this date is made even more significant because starting today there are only 30 days left until the elections for the renewal of the European Parliament on 8 and 9 June.

To raise European citizens’ awareness of the importance of going to the polls to make our democracy ever stronger, the European Parliament has launched the communication campaign “Use your vote, don’t let others decide for you”.

In fact, the European Parliament is the only European institution elected directly by the people. As such, it is also the only one that responds directly to citizens and that can call other institutions to account for their actions, with the aim of guaranteeing a more transparent and democratic Europe.

Precisely for this reason the European Commission and the European Parliament are committed to providing the public with information on the upcoming elections and their importance for the future of Europe. The institutional communication initiatives are non-partisan and this campaign, focused on the achievements of the EU and Parliament, highlights the importance of voting as instrument of democratic participation.

With the aim of spreading the information campaign widely and reaching as many Cuneo citizens as possible, our Europe Direct center has therefore put up official posters in high-traffic places in the Municipality of Cuneo to remind everyone to go and vote on June 8th and 9th.

You will find them at the entrance to the municipal buildings, in the Town Hall, in the library, in the shop window under the arcades of Via Roma… in short, you cannot miss them!

Now all you have to do is mark the election date on your calendar and help us spread the word.

If you haven’t already done so, we also remind you that you can join the Insieme-per.eu community, a project of the European Parliament which aims to involve as many people as possible in the democratic life of Europe and, in particular, to encourage them to participate in the 2024 European elections.

“The democracy of the European Union is more important today than ever. Your vote will decide which direction Europe will take in the next five years. It will decide the Europe we live in. Don’t let others choose for you. The 6-9 June 2024, go vote. Every vote counts.” – Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament
