On the occasion of the “Mauthausen International Ceremony“, an event which every year sees the participation of students from all over Europe, a group of young people from high schools in Monza undertook a significant journey through the symbolic places of Nazi atrocities, culminating with a visit to Mauthausen concentration camp. This memory journey involved nine students, five girls and four boys, selected from the various institutes in Monza: P. Frisi High School, Hensemberger Institute, C. Porta High School, N. Valentini Artistic High School, B. Zucchi High School, Olivetti Institute, M. Bianchi Institute, A. Mapelli Institute, and IS Enzo Ferrari. Their journey was supported by the presence of a municipal councilor and by the city banner, a symbol of the support of the municipal administration which financed the trip.
Departing from Sesto San Giovanni on 3 May, the young people first visited Hartheim Castle and the Gusen Memorial, before reaching Mauthausen. Here they participated in the international ceremony, a moment of profound remembrance and reflection on the tragedies of the past, testifying to their commitment to not forgetting.
This initiative is the result of a collaboration between ANED Section of Monza and Sesto San Giovanni and the Ventimilaleghe Association. It is promoted annually by the Municipal Administration of Monza, which sees memory education as a fundamental pillar for the civic education of young people.
This trip represents not only an opportunity for historical learning but also a moment of personal growth for students, who can thus experience first-hand the scars of European history, better understanding the roots and consequences of the horrors perpetrated by Nazi-fascism. An experience that will remain imprinted in their minds, reinforcing the message that freedom and humanity are values to be preserved every day.
