PAVIA – Professor Gianluca Vago he was confirmed as president of the National Center for Oncological Hadrontherapy (Cnao) of Pavia for another five years. Vago, full professor of Pathological Anatomy at the University of Milan and former Rector from 2012 to 2018, had been at the helm of the Cnao since 2019.

Vago’s confirmation comes at the end of his first five-year mandate and represents a sign of continuity and trust in his work. Under his leadership, the CNAO consolidated its position as an international center of excellence for the treatment of tumors with hadrontherapy, an innovative technique that uses high-energy ion beams to precisely target tumor cells.

“The reconfirmation of Professor Vago is excellent news for the Cnao and for the entire Italian oncology scene”commented the professor Ruggero De Mariapresident of the Alliance Against Cancer and new representative of the Ministry of Health on the Cnao Board of Directors. “Vago is an internationally recognized leader in the field of oncology and has been able to lead the Cnao with great competence and strategic vision”.

The Cnao, created on the initiative of the TERA Foundation, has obtained the support of the Ministry of Health, the Lombardy Region, the Municipality of Pavia and various banking foundations in recent years. Thanks to these resources, the Cnao has been able to launch an ambitious expansion project that will transform it into the most complete center in the world for precision radiotherapy with hadrons.

The project involves the inclusion of a third ion source for research activities, the addition of a machine dedicated to proton therapy with a rotating beam system around the patient and an accelerator dedicated to Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), a with particles for the treatment of metastatic lesions and complex neoplasms.

“The expansion of the Cnao will allow us to offer our patients the most innovative and personalized therapies available”declared Professor Vago. “We are proud to be a reference center for cancer research and treatment and we will continue to work to improve the lives of cancer patients”.
