Clashes during the G7 in Venice

During the G7 of Justice in Venice, renamed by the demonstrators of the social centers of the North East as “of injustice”, clashes with the police occurred a few steps from the event. Tensions erupted as around 250 protesters tried to approach the meeting site, with police carrying out some attacks to disperse the crowd and prevent any violence.

Demonstrators displayed Palestinian flags and chanted slogans in support of Gaza, protesting against the current situation in Palestine and criticizing ministers for not being able to understand the reality of the world. They expressed their dissent regarding the war and underlined the importance of justice “from below” that defends territorial realities.

Meanwhile, at the summit of justice ministers of the seven countries, the “Venice Justice Group” was created, a permanent body aimed at strengthening and coordinating initiatives on urgent issues, including problems related to the war in Ukraine and the fight against organized crime, human trafficking and the spread of dangerous drugs such as fentanyl.

During the summit, experiences and proposals on the fight against international trafficking of synthetic drugs and human trafficking were shared. Furthermore, concern was expressed about the situation in Ukraine and the fight against international corruption.

Some Venetian citizens demonstrated silently by hanging a white sheet with the writing “There can be no justice without social, economic and environmental sharing, when will tax havens be abolished?” from the windows of a building opposite the summit building, attracting the attention of the ministers who passed under that balcony before entering the G7.
