When beer and science go hand in hand: “Pint of Science” returns to Catania (and 23 other Italian cities)

The most sparkling event with scientific dissemination returns to 76 pubs and 24 Italian cities on the evenings of 13, 14 and 15 May. From the six cities of the first edition in 2015 to the 24 cities of the 2024 edition: the rhythm is that of an event that is increasingly loved for its informal way of making science a shared knowledge.

And Catania cannot miss the call, indeed it is the leader with the national responsibility of the organization.

Talking about science over a mug of beer? A bet that has proven successful in Catania since the first participation in the international event, Pint of Science, in 2017. And for this edition, which will take place from Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th Maythe researchers from Catania will be in three pubs in the city, al Joyce Irish Pub in via Montesano, al Mr. Hyde Pub in via S. Filomena, al The Boozer of via Caff, who have now become inseparable companions in this adventure between science and beer.

In Catania, of the six themes of the Festival, three will be present: Atoms to Galaxies (chemistry, physics and astronomy), Planet Earth (earth sciences, evolution and zoology) e Tech Me Out (technology).

All nine are unmissable talk scheduled for release 2024 Of Pint of Science Catania – one each for each of the three themes and for each of the three evenings, all starting at 9pm.

In line with the national program, also in Catania, the choice will be difficult between the traditional themes on the understanding of the Universe and its constituents which always have a magnetic and technological innovation, sustainability, climate emergency And environmentat the center of many talks, some of which are also inspired by the many research initiatives that see Catania researchers engaged in the many funding projects within the National Research and Resilience Plan.

As always, the real problem will be the choice, given the number of speakers and the topics.

Monday 13 May to open the 2024 edition, al The Boozerit will be Giovanni Muscatodirector of the DIEEI of the University of Catania, who will talk to us about robots and how they are invading our lives, Alfio Bonanno, first researcher at the INAF-Astrophysical Observatory of Catania and associated with the INFN Section of Catania, will instead be at the Joyce Irish Pub to talk about black holes and Giuliana Impellizzeri, CNR-IMM, will talk to us about water but over a mug of beer at Mr. Hyde.

Tuesday 14thto the Mr. HydeFrancesco Tiralongo (DSBGA-Unict) will talk to us about a very hot topic, namely invasions by alien species in our seas, while in the other pubs the topics of quantum cryptography with Giuliano Chiriacò (DFA-Unict) and the conquest of space will alternate with Giuseppe Cutispoto (INAF-OACT). To conclude, Wednesday 24th, al Joyce Irish Pub, Anna Sinopoulou (INFN-Catania Section) will talk about the large underwater telescope, KM3NeT under construction off the coast of Capo Passero for the study of neutrinos, while in the other pubs we will talk about underwater mountains and graphene nanosensors with Pierpaolo Consoli (SZN) and Felice Torrisi (DFA-Unict).

During each of the three evenings, the pubs involved will host interactive presentations of around 40 minutes followed by questions from the public, in an atmosphere made conversational and relaxed also thanks to the beers poured during the conversation.

The beating heart of the association are also the many volunteers who are part of the local teams who, with great passion for science and for the pleasure of meeting together, organize this event. A special mention cannot fail to be made to the Dream Team from Catania who, very close-knit, have been organizing the event for years, combining science, beer and fun.

Pint of Science is organized by the non-profit cultural association “Pint of Science Italia” ed it is a non-profit event in which everyone collaborates on a voluntary basis, created thanks to the teams operating in each city.

This year too, special thanks go toINFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics), which has accompanied Pint of Science Italia since its first edition with sponsorship throughout the territory. And also atINAF (National Institute of Astrophysics), sponsor of the Atoms to Galaxies theme, together with the new arrivals NBFCs-National Center for Biodiversity and OGS-National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics, sponsor of the Planet Earth theme, and of the Extended Partnership for Quantum Sciences and Technologies, NQSTI-National Quantum Science and Technology Institute, sponsor of the Tech Me Out theme. However, the Sicilian Center for Nuclear Physics and Structure of Matter (CSFNSM) which has been supporting the festival in Catania for many years now and without which Pint of Science would never have arrived in Catania and, since last year, also in Messina.

Pint of science – the history and the numbers

In 2012 Michael Motskin and Praveen Paul were two researchers at Imperial College London. They started an event called “Meet the researchers” in which some patients with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, motor neuron disease and multiple sclerosis could go to their laboratories to see what kind of research they did. The event was very motivating for both visitors and researchers. They thought that if people want to go into labs and meet researchers, why not take researchers out to meet people? And so Pint of Science was born. The first edition of Pint of Science was held in May 2013 (in the UK alone) which brought some of the most renowned researchers to the general public to tell science and beer lovers about their innovative work.

In Italy, the event arrived in 2015, involving the first six cities – Genoa, Trento, Siena, Rome, Pavia, Milan – which more than tripled in the space of just a few years. In 2019, the festival took place simultaneously in a 23 Italian cities (Avellino-Sarno, Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Ferrara, Genoa, L’Aquila, Milan, Naples, Padua, Palermo, Pisa-Lucca, Pavia, Reggio Calabria, Rome, Siena, Trento-Rovereto, Trieste and Turin) reaching record attendance and, after the cancellation of the 2020 edition, due to the pandemic, in 2021, to remain close to its audience, the festival was created online with a very engaging format. Since 2022 the festival has returned to attendance, and the 2024 edition that we are preparing to experience sees 24 cities involved and an ever-increasing number of pubs and researchers. Internationally they are 26 countries involved literally in every corner of the world (Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Laos, Mexico, Norway, Holland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Spain, United States, Sweden, Switzerland , Thailand and Hungary).
