PADUA – The record-breaking hospital was conceived, designed and built in its architectural lines and technical and healthcare contents. Yesterday, a resolution by the general director of the University Hospital Company, Giuseppe Dal Ben, sanctioned this the approval of the technical and economic feasibility design of the new polyclinic in Padua East after 34 local authorities had expressed their favor. A work from 870 million euros and 963 beds which will become an international point of reference for medical care and research given that for the first time laboratories and researchers will be just a few meters from patients’ beds. A Tower will be built where a thousand researchers will work. The green light from the consortium of designers led by Polytechnic Engineering of Modena who drew it up for 3 million euros leads directly to the economic scenario.

Padua East Hospital, the financial question

The Region must bear the cost of the operation. It already has 109 million in cash but has to look for a financial partner with strong shoulders, like Inail for example. In the Program Agreement signed between the various bodies in Article 4, when speaking of funding, reference is made to “primary institutes including Inail”. In this sense, on April 16th, the Region sent a note to the Ministry of Health which contained the estimated economic needs, 800 million, which could be obtained through a mortgage. The response is expected in a couple of months. If it is positive, the Institute will be able to instruct the Hospital-Company to have the definitive and executive project drawn up by Politecnica which has an option on the topic and then open a tender on its own to identify the builders. Declared objective: executive project by 2024, opening of the tender by 2025, final goal 2031.

What the new hospital will be like

The first large post-covid hospital will be on an area of 40 hectares connected to the ring roads with a specific train stop and a tram terminus. 40 percent of the rooms will be single. Each department will be modular in the sense that in case of infections, sections or parts of them can be closed without interfering with the others. The same goes for the 90 intensive care beds. In the central plate 45 operating rooms, many hybrid, i.e. with remote-controlled robots, then 200 clinical clinics and 200 surgical ones for the day hospital. The “work” capacity will be 36 thousand surgical operations per year and 900 thousand outpatient services. Every day it will be attended by 10 thousand people including university students. In addition to theheliport it will also have a vertiport for the transport of drugs and in the future also organs for transplantation. The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, commented: «It is a work that Padua deserves for its history, for how it will be able to carry it forward thanks to the professionalism it is able to express in the scientific field. The Padua East hospital will be an iconic work. A legacy that will set the pace, once again, in the ability of the Veneto to keep its gaze turned to the future, anticipating the needs of the times to come.”
