The mayor Federico Basile and the councilor for sports policies Massimo Finocchiaro were present and the XXXVI edition of “Bicincitta”during a press conference, attended by the presidents of UISP Me, Santino Cannavò, of ACCIR, Rosario Tuvè, and of the Italian Red Cross committee of Messina, Antonio Chimicata; and for UOC Arpa Sicilia, Dr. Anna Scalia. “Bicincittà” is a cycling tour, sponsored by the Municipality of Messina and promoted by Uisp, which will take place on Sunday 12 May simultaneously throughout Italy. In Messina meeting in Piazza Duomo at 8am and departure at 9.30am.

“As has already happened in previous years – declared Mayor Basile – I will also participate in Bicincittà, an initiative that allows citizens to experience a day of sport and health, in the name of sustainable and alternative mobility, urban culture and environmental education. I invite everyone, from adults to children, to participate in this event, which sends a strong message on alternative transport methods, a central theme of our governance. I thank all those who contribute in various capacities to the organization of the event.”

“Sport, but also lots of fun and sustainable mobility – Councilor Finocchiaro highlighted – are the themes of Bicincittà, a traditional event in Messina and other Italian cities. It’s the 36th event, which means that this initiative works and people like it. A cycle touring ride, to experience the city differently and which integrates perfectly with the line of the municipal administration. Bicincittà enhances sport and the use of the bike, but goes further because it means sharing, participation and integration. A real party open to all thanks to the commitment of the organizers, partners, the municipal police force and the municipal offices”.

The president of UISP Messina Cannavò, after having thanked the municipal administration and discussed the issues of environmental eco-sustainability and urban mobility, illustrated the two routes of 18 km and 4 for children. Participation is free.

The road system

To allow the XXXVI edition of Bicincittà to take place and to better streamline vehicular traffic, the Urban Mobility service has placed road restrictions. The route of the event, whose meeting is scheduled in Piazza Duomo at 8 am, starting at 9.30 am, will include Piazza Duomo, Corso Cavour, Via Cannizzaro, Via dei Mille, Via Maddalena, Viale San Martino (Mountain carriageway) up to Viale Europa , viale San Martino (sea carriageway), Maddalena, Bassi, del Vespro, Garibaldi, San Giacomo and arrival in Piazza Duomo for the 4 km route, while, for the 18 km route, from via Garibaldi, near Largo San Giacomo, we will continue towards via Loggia dei Mercanti, Argentieri, Consulato del Mare, piazza Antonello, Sant’Agostino, XXIV Maggio, viale Boccetta, Garibaldi, piazza Castronovo, viali Giostra, Regina Elena, Regina Margherita, Principe Umberto (refreshment break in front Sacrario Cristo Re), Italy and Europe, via Catania, San Cosimo, Maregrosso, Salandra, La Farina, Trieste, Geraci, Cesare Battisti and I Settembre, arriving in Piazza Duomo. Traffic will therefore be prohibited on the streets affected, limited to the passage of the cycle touring caravan, with the exception of intersections with traffic lights which will be manned.
