PRESS RELEASE

In the prestigious setting of the Guglielmi theatre, yesterday, the Apuoversiliesi Paladins presented an important event, addressing the crucial topic of coastal erosion with an interesting historical/scientific reconstruction.
This problem, closely felt by our community, today offers us the opportunity for a profound reflection on the future of our coast and our coasts.
During the procedure for the port regulatory plan to be subjected to VAS (strategic environmental assessment) by the Ministry of the Environment, the Municipality provided the port system Authority with a contribution of technical observations aimed at safeguarding the local coastal balance.
With the counterarguments provided, the Port System Authority had to admit that, unlike what was initially reported, the Port of Marina di Carrara, in its current configuration, contributes to worsening the erosive processes affecting our coastline by up to 3, 5 km south of the breakwater (and not 0.5 km as initially represented), with negative effects on coastal morphodynamics, even south of the mouth of the Lavello.
This data necessarily implies the need to consider such interferences in the evaluation of compensatory works of a compensatory nature. And it is a cause for concern that this relevant finding was not adequately considered in the coastal morphodynamic modeling study that supports the Port Master Plan (PRP).
It is therefore necessary to update the study, eliminating the reported errors and inserting the so-called zero scenario, in order to demonstrate the erosive differences of the new port works compared to the current state.
The Municipality has therefore taken steps to send a note today to the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Safety and to the Port System Authority expressly requesting further study of the aforementioned considerations, in order to adopt the necessary activities to minimize impacts on the coastal environment mass. We therefore remain beyond what the outcome of the SEA procedure may be, awaiting forms of collaboration with the Ministry and the AdSP to find shared solutions.
We assure our citizens that we will make every effort to protect our coastal environment and our beach activities, keeping them informed of any developments and continuing to work to defend our interests and our territory.
