It will be a very special edition. This year the Cannes Film Festival is preparing to welcome: Francis Ford Coppola, Paolo Sorrentino, actresses Meryl Streep and Emma Stone. Lots of stars and therefore wonderful red carpets, but there is a but that looms. The fear of a new wave of ‘Me Too’, which being in France we call ‘Moi Aussi’. The fear is well founded because for some days there have been rumors that at the opening of the Festival an important investigation by Mediapart on the French ‘Me Too’ will be released.
What could happen
Instead of the films and the clothes of the actresses, the newspapers could end up with a dozen names of actors and directors (they would be super stars) who would be involved in a new investigation. These hypothetical names are already circulating in industry circles. So far there is nothing confirmed but the rumors are persistent also because the French film industry has been waiting for its moment for many years ‘Moi Aussi’: will it happen these days? The president of the exhibition, Iris Knoblochassured that, if this were to happen, everything possible would be done to “making the right decision on a case-by-case basis” with the right consequences on the film in question.
The short film that makes French cinema tremble
What is certain, however, is the presentation of a work byactress Judith Godrechewho is the main voice of the movement in the Hexagone, as he denounced the directors Benoit Jacquot and Jacques Doillon for rape: the actress will present a short film with the testimonies of victims of sexual violence in cinema. Godreche reported this year that she was raped and abused by two directors when she was a teenager. The short film will be included in the 2024 official selection and will be screened at the opening ceremony of the ‘Un certain Regard’ section and at the open-air cinema on the beach in Cannes. Godreche, who is 52 years old, also told how the idea for the short film was born: a month after she reported it, in February this year, during the French Cesar gala, she received testimonies from “a river of victims of all origins and all generations”. From there the idea of the short film ‘Moi, aussi’ was born, in which a thousand people participate. The work, according to the festival, will testify to how one can move on from “a pain without words, to a liberation of the word”.
