The new Lord of the Rings films are official, and in these hours Warner Bros has announced both the release date and the great return of Peter Jacksonformer director of the previous two film trilogies of Middle Earth.
This was revealed in an official press release from Warner Bros. Discovery, according to which Warner Bros Pictures will publish the first chapter of a Lord of the Rings film saga in 2026: this feature film will not be a remake of films already made in the past but will offer a new story centered on Gollum, the iconic character played on the big screen by Andy Serkis in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. Jackson, director of the two trilogies, will return as producer – after being courted for a long time by Warner Bros, as we revealed some time ago – together with his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens and “they will be involved in every step of the process,” said David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, during an earnings call today.
The project is currently in the early stages of script development by writers Walsh and Boyens, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, with the working title of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that the film will be directed by and starring Serkis, who will return as Gollum and will occupy the director’s chair, inheriting it from Peter Jackson. Jackson, Walsh and Boyens stated: “It’s an honor and a privilege to return to Middle-earth with our dear friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that stinky Gollum!“
Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth films have grossed nearly $6 billion worldwide, while the The Lord of the Rings was nominated for 30 Academy Awards and took home 17 trophies, including best film for 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
