The Via del Sale is not just a trekking route, but an adventure that will allow you to cross the Ligurian Apennines, joining the Oltrepò Pavese to the Ligurian Sea. This path of about 90 km it is a real immersion in the history, nature and culture of the Italian regions it passes through, offering breathtaking views and stretches of uncontaminated nature. Origins and history of the Salt Road

Since Roman times the salt trade it was essential for the economy and for food conservation. Transporting salt from the Ligurian coast to the Po Valley was therefore a challenge to be won at all costs. In this context, the ancient salt routes were born, designed to be traveled with the help of animals and then later by carriages.

This particular Salt Road, therefore, will give you the idea of difficulty in overcoming the Apennine stretch and reach the flat areas of Northern Italy. Today the route is mainly used for hiking purposes and includes several stages. It can of course be completed in its entirety or in short sections.

The main stages on foot: what are they?

If you want to travel the entire route you will have to budget at least 4 days. The overall length is approximately 87 kilometres, while the ideal period to do this route is spring or the first half of autumn. Even in summer it is possible to do this, as long as the temperatures are not too high. The main stages are:

  • Varzi to Capanne di Cosola: this stretch measures approximately 21 kilometres, of which a small part is on asphalt. This part of the trail also involves overcoming a certain difference in altitude and the surface is mainly dirt.
  • Cosola in Torriglia: the second stage is approximately 24 kilometers. It involves some climbs and passage through plateaus. After passing small villages you reach Torriglia, from where you can then set off again the following day.
  • Torriglia in Uscio: As you get closer to the sea, the path becomes more downhill. The third and penultimate stage measures 23 kilometres, of which 5 are on asphalt road.
  • I exit in Portofino: The last stage will allow you to finally reach the beautiful Portofino. It will take you approximately 21 kilometers and 2 of these are on asphalt. It starts from around 480 meters above sea level and, going down, you will first have a beautiful view of Camogli and then you will arrive at the center of Portofino.

The countries to visit along the route

The Salt Road is not only a nature trail, but also a journey to discover small villages and natural environments rich in charm and history. Along the way it is worth visiting these places:

  • Varzi: Starting point of the trek, Varzi is known for its gastronomic specialties, such as the famous Varzi salami. The medieval village is enchanting with its narrow streets and ancient porticoes.
  • Torriglia: In Val Trebbia there is this beautiful village known for its ancient castle, although reduced to ruins.
  • Camogli: Characteristic for its colorful houses and long maritime tradition, Camogli is a pearl of the Ligurian coast known for its port and its imposing basilica on the sea.
  • Portofino: The arrival point of the trek, Portofino is an icon of beauty and luxury. Its marina, exclusive boutiques and surrounding nature make it one of the most sought-after destinations internationally.

How to get to the start of the trail

To start the journey along the Via del Sale, you will have to reach one of two starting points: Varzi or Portofino. Arriving by car or public transport is not difficult, as is returning back to the starting point.

  • To reach Varzi, you can arrive either by car along the SS461 which connects Lombardy to Piacenza, or by taking a direct bus from Milan or Voghera.
  • Instead, to get to Portofino, you will have to arrive in Santa Margherita Ligure along the Via Aurelia and then continue along the peninsula until you reach Portofino. The closest station is Santa Margherita, from which public buses leave for the town.

Via del Sale by motorbike: the route to follow

The Salt Road is not only a destination for trekking lovers, but also represents an unforgettable experience for motorcyclists who seek adventure and scenic beauty. The path in this case is a little different because, generally, we start from Limone Piemonte and arrive in Ventimiglia.

The way forward includes the Colle di Tenda and you pass the French border. The route is asphalted, although there are some uphill dirt sections, therefore suitable for certain types of motorbikes. So we get up to 2,270 meters above sea level and then descend towards Liguria and the gentle landscapes of the coast.
