“I was a loose cannon. Now I’ll tell you about our hardships”

The new Giulia Salemi.

«Ten years ago I was a loose cannon, before I thought something I had already done it».

In 2016 on the red carpet of the Venice Film Festival he accompanied Paolo Sorrentino who presented The Young Pope. With slits and very deep necklines.

«In order to fill a space I was also willing to be silly» (laughs, ed.).

Result?

«For many I have become a kind of monster… Today everything has changed, everyone can and should dress as they want. In the States Jennifer Lopez or Rihanna have provocative dresses that become iconic. If you try here in Italy, you risk being thought of as a monster.”

And now?

«I am more calm and reflective. And with my podcast I tackle more serious topics.”

His podcast is entitled Non lo fa x moda, it was the most followed on Spotify and is now in the top 10 of Spotify and also of Apple. In short, it is a sort of rebirth for this model and presenter born in Piacenza 31 years ago to an Iranian mother. «As a child I suffered from prejudice, they made fun of me because I am half Persian». She made herself known in Veline in 2012 then she came third in Miss Italy, she took part in Beijing Express, she caused a stir in Venice, we saw her in a couple of Big Brother and so on. Result: she has almost two million followers on Instagram and her podcast debuted with Alfonso Signorini who said he was beaten as a child because “I liked playing with girls”. Without prejudice and clichés, Giulia Salemi tries to grow without resting on the volatile popularity of social media: “I’m looking for new stimuli,” she says, taking advantage of an always overused but increasingly disregarded slogan. «To start being taken seriously, I had to work three times as hard as the others».

Let’s not exaggerate.

«If people normally start from zero, I started from -100 because, in short, prejudices are strong and I struggled to overcome them».

Is this why you chose a podcast?

«It was an idea that I had had for some time but I always put it off until I had the right idea: to talk about generational discomfort. It should have been called discomfort.com, but I wasn’t very convinced. Then, speaking with a journalist, I realized that I didn’t want to do anything fake and that I wasn’t doing it just for fashion. There I understood that it was the right title for me.”

Basically what is it?

«The podcast is my living room, a sort of psychoanalytic chat. By talking, we understand. And I listen without judging. It’s nice to talk about yourself. And it’s nice to listen. Each of us has our own wounds and often, from these wounds, the stimuli that have transformed us into who we are were born.”

Today there is a symbolic interviewer: Francesca Fagnani.

«I dream of his dick. She is very prepared, very strong.”

Salemi, in your podcast you talk about “discomfort”.

«We are the devi generation. As soon as you get up in the morning and look at your cell phone, all the gods in the world rain down on you.”

And social media?

“Social media are like the dementors in Harry Potter, they take your soul away.”

You can say he asked for it.

«Yes, but it’s not a problem that concerns only me. Anyone who lives or uses social media suffers the same pressures.”

A continuous flow.

«Once you’re up, you’re up. Then suddenly you’re down. A continuous cycle.”

L’Estetista Cinica, then Giulia De Lellis, Beatrice Luzzi and others also passed through her “living room”.

«We talk to understand what really matters in life».

For her?

«After years of superficiality, I now want to delve deeper. And don’t forget the people who were decisive in my life.”

For example?

«My grandmother is 85 years old. I want to be able to say that I didn’t let her miss anything.

The other day we went together to Sempione Park, here in Milan, and we found ourselves hugging the trees, we were so happy together.”
