The Milan airport of Linate has installed some interfaces to allow passengers to board planes without using documents. This is a technology called Faceboarding and allows you to be identified by your facial features. This is not the initiative of a single airline. All companies that want to implement this type of technology in their boarding will be able to take advantage of these terminals.

Passengers will have to upload their document on the airport platform via an app or at the totems themselves Faceboarding present in Linate airport. In this way the cameras will be able to recognize their face and confirm their identity without the need to present documents.

How Faceboarding works at Linate

From Tuesday 7 May it is available at the Milan airport Linate, a service of Faceboarding to allow passengers to board their flight and go through security checks without the need to show documents. In fact, it will be enough to show your face to some interfaces equipped with recognition systems to be able to move on without further checks.

This is not a system implemented by a single airline, but an installed infrastructure own from Linate airport. Companies can decide to join it, but at the moment only a few of them have complied. Among these is Ita Airways, the Italian company born after the bankruptcy of Alitalia and about to be purchased by Lufthansa, but also the national airline of Sweden, Norway and Denmark SAS.

Sea, the company that manages Linate airport, issued a press release in this regard: “The service is available to all airlines that want to integrate their check-in and boarding systems with the Faceboarding. This service optimizes the passenger experience at the airport by allowing those who have previously registered via the kiosks in the airport or directly from their mobile devices to reduce the time needed to check their identity documents and increase their security. In fact, it will no longer be necessary to show your documents and boarding pass at the pre security turnstiles and gates for boarding which become self-service.”

Faceboarding in European airports

To use the Faceboarding passengers will have to upload their documents to the airport app or directly on site specially set up kiosks. In this way you will be able to register your face by connecting it to your Identity Card or passport: “With this safe, simple and rapid technology, Faceboarding developed in collaboration with Enac and the State Police, in addition to offering greater speed of checks, increases effectiveness and guarantees the protection of passengers’ privacy and data” concludes Sea.

Linate is the first Italian airport to implement Faceboarding, but several other European airports are already using this technology to speed up passenger boarding processes and reduce the workload of security personnel. In Europe the service is available in all airports of Paris, Barcelona, ​​Frankfurt, Munich and London. In the rest of the world, similar systems exist at several international airports in Japan, India, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong and Malaysia, as well as in about thirty American ports.
