The US government has revoked some licenses that allowed US microchip companies to sell products and components to China’s Huawei. The Department of Commerce announced this on Tuesday, without specifying which products the export ban was decided on. Various restrictions on exports of technology and in particular chips to China have been introduced since 2019, out of fear that they could be used in the Chinese military sector: relations between private companies and the Chinese state are very close.

Huawei had been very affected by the first bans and then by those defined by President Joe Biden’s administration in October 2022, but in recent times it has shown the ability to circumvent them and signs of recovery: in particular it presented a computer that uses systems of artificial intelligence based on a chip from the US company Intel (MateBook X Pro) and a smartphone that uses a microchip that it shouldn’t have had. According to some experts cited by Financial Times the license revocations concern the companies Intel and Qualcomm and could affect Huawei’s ability to supply chips for computers and smartphones.
