EU decision on Ita-Lufthansa postponed to 4 July – News

The EU’s final verdict on Ita-Lufthansa is postponed to July 4th. The European Commission announced this after receiving the latest package of commitments drawn up by the parties to obtain the green light for the wedding. The previous deadline of 13 June, it is specified, was automatically postponed by 15 working days as required by the merger regulation.

This morning the Mef announced that “the shareholder of Ita Airways presented together with Lufthansa DLH the additions to the remedies according to the requests of the competition commission itself and within the time required to meet the deadline of 13 June”.

The EU will “carefully evaluate” the new commitments presented by Lufthansa and the Mef “aimed at resolving the preliminary competition problems” identified for the marriage between the German ski giant and ITA, says a spokeswoman for the EU Commission. Brussels will now launch the market test, a market simulation to examine whether the proposed commitments respond to requests aimed at avoiding distortions of competition. Under the EU lens there are in particular 39 short and long-haul routes that connect Italy with Central Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan; and the risk of a dominant position in Linate airport.
