An ancient book in 155 languages ​​found in Genoa: it had been stolen from the Comboni of Brescia

Was a printed book from 1806 was recovered in Genoa which represents the largest catalog of alphabets and characters never published and had been stolen years ago from the Comboni library of Brescia.

«They found him on a stall in Genoa – says the superior, Father Girolamo Miante –. The police told me that he was ready to be sold and taken abroad.” The volume, entitled «Oratio dominica in 155 linguas versa et exoticis characteribus plerumque expressa», contains the translation of the Our Father prayer into 155 languages (pater noster, in Latin). The Comboni father describes it as a large volume with a thick cardboard cover and well-preserved blank pages.

The Comboni missionaries of Viale Venezia they don’t know when it was stolen: «I didn’t even know it existed. It probably happened decades ago, considering that we have been in Brescia since the beginning of the twentieth century”, says the superior of the community. The book is anyway already been brought back to the city and now we are deciding what to do: «The general archive of the Comboni is in Rome, it is possible that it will be transferred there soon», continues Miante.

The volume was found by the Carabinieri of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Genoa as part of a recent investigation.
