Weather report. Storm Oscar over the Atlantic

The center of the Atlantic storm named Oscar is today on the eastern sector of the Azores, with baric values that drop up to 991hPa and what they represent a rarity for the season, the one in which the Azores anticyclone should have its roots in this area of the ocean. From the center of Oscar develops a long disturbed band that extends from the eastern Azores to the Canary Islands, passing through the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira, responsible for severe bad weather and winds of up to 100km/h.

In Funchal the rainfall accumulations in 24 hours exceeded 540mm in 24 hours, a value that beats the previous record of 347mm from 2008; there are already floods and landslides, while the rains continue torrential on the whole island. During the day, a weakening of the phenomena is expected, after accumulations of up to 250 mm have been reached locally. Dozens of flights were diverted to Gran Canaria, unable to land due to poor visibility. The same fate has been suffered by some direct flights to the western Canary Islands, such as Tenerife, also in this case diverted to the more eastern Gran Canaria.

Heavy rains are affecting the central-western Canary Islands, about 400km further south. In Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Gran Canaria rainfall accumulations could exceed 400mm by Wednesday. Less abundant rains will affect the eastern islands, such as Tenerife and Fuerteventura.

Strong southwesterly winds are picking up on the Canary Islands, where the gusts can reach 100km/h, so much so that the red flag has been hoisted on many beaches imposing a ban on bathing; the cable car that reaches the summit of Pico del Teide in Tenerife will remain closed.

Between Thursday and Friday the strong winds triggered by the Oscar storm will sweep the western coasts of the Iberian Peninsula, while over the weekend they could reach Ireland, together with even abundant rains and showers. At the same time the currents from the south will carry very mild air which will bring temperatures up to around 26/28° in the eastern parts of the United Kingdom.
