It would have been a terrible Monday for Moscaat least according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. The Russiain the last day, has reportedly lost 1,110 men and 66 artillery systems in Ukraine. The statements, made by the Kiev armed forces on Monday, after Moscow claimed that its troops had taken two more villages in the east of the war-torn country, are reported by Newsweek. Russia, according to an update from the Kiev armed forces published on social media, has suffered a total of 543,810 casualties, including fallen at the front and wounded in Ukraine since February 2022 and lost just under 14,600 artillery systems. On Monday, the British newspaper also reports, the Ukrainian General Staff declared that, since Sunday morning, 115 Russian vehicles of various types had been destroyed, including 19 tanks and 26 armored personnel carriers. Newsweek specifies, however, that it was unable to independently verify the numbers and that it had contacted the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment. The counting of casualties and losses on the battlefield, it is stressed, is always unclear during active conflicts and experts urge caution when dealing with the figures provided by both sides in a war.

THE ESTIMATES

The British government estimated in late May that Russia’s total casualties had likely reached 500,000. Throughout May 2024, Moscow’s average daily casualty number was more than 1,200, according to the UK Ministry of Defence, marking the highest average daily casualty for Moscow in the full-scale war, as the Kremlin continued its recruitment drive to swell its ranks, battered by a “continuing attrition offensive” along hundreds of kilometres of frontline.

THE FRONT

Ukraine has claimed that Russia is capable of recruiting up to 30,000 new soldiers into its ranks each month, bolstering its bloody tactics of slow but steady territorial gains that result in many casualties. While launching a cross-border offensive from Russia’s Belgorod region into Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region in early May, Moscow has redoubled its efforts to advance west into Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region. The Ukrainian military has repeatedly reported that the heaviest fighting is taking place east of the strategic Donetsk town of Pokrovsk, while Russia has advanced west of the former Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka. Moscow has controlled Avdiivka since February.

Statements from both sides remain contradictory. On Sunday, Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces had claimed to have captured two villages in the Donetsk region. Its forces now control Spirne, a settlement east of Donetsk and not far from the Luhansk region, the Kremlin said. They have also occupied Novooleksandrivka, a village east of Pokrovsk and northwest of Avdiivka. On Monday, the Ukrainian military claimed its troops had “repelled” eight Russian attacks east of the Donetsk settlement of Siversk, including in the Spirne area, in the previous days. Ukraine had repelled 42 Russian attacks east of Pokrovsk, including assaults near Novooleksandrivka, the Kremlin said.
