UK Elections: Sunak Challenges Starmer

Polls will open on July 4 in the United Kingdom to elect the 650 new members of the House of Commons. The snap election, which will be held six months before the natural end of the legislature, was called last May with a surprise announcement by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. And the current occupant of Number 10 Downing Street is, according to polls, significantly behind Labour leader Keir Starmer, who could win the largest majority ever in the post-war period.

UK Election Polls

For the first time in more than a decade, polls speak of a clear advantage of the Labour Party over the Conservatives. A possible victory of Starmer would therefore bring the Labour Party back to power after 14 years: the last time was in 2010, when Gordon Brown was leading the country. On the other front, however, the Conservative Party of Sunak could instead witness the worst result in its history. According to some polls, in fact, the Labour Party would even be 20 points ahead of the Tories: if this were the case, Starmer would obtain a historic result, with more than 200 seats.
